This WatchThis model was one of the first released under the TAG Heuer name in 1985, just after TAG acquired Heuer. It is essentially a Heuer 844 with an updated logo. This was the last of the famous 844 automatic series of models, and therefore, the only TAG Heuer signed version. It was classed as being in the 1000 series, a numbering system that TAG Heuer inherited from Heuer. TAG Heuer continued to use this system, with the 1500, 2000 etc series.
It really is a classic icon of the dive-watch world; it is wonderfully proportioned with its 42mm case (44mm including the crown). Its versatile design allows it to sport a different look, from the standard jubilee, stainless steel bracelet to the most colourful of NATO straps. It has the build quality to go anywhere, driven by the tough and high performing 25 jewel ETA 2872, beating at 28800 BPH. The dial has the triangle at the 12 position, tritium coated hour pips with a date window at 3 o’clock and elegant Mercedes hands filled with tritium lume.
This watch is sold as Watch & Box, therefore it comes with an original period correct TAG Heuer signed Box and a catalogue too. There is no-known previous service history with the watch, although we have serviced it in our on-site workshop. The bracelet does feature a lot of wear and has some common stretch. The clasp shuts and locks but the diver extension is a little loose. I believe the crown has been replaced at some point but works just the same.
What we think
The 844 series offers a lot of watch for not an awful lot of money, this reference 844/5 is interesting as it is one of the very first watches to feature both TAG & Heuer on the dial!
