This Watch

This is a 1962 Bulova “Selfwinding” date model, Swiss made, and powered by a quality automatic movement. The dial is wonderfully architectural: a clean, sunburst-style central section sits slightly recessed, while the outer chapter ring adds depth and a very “designed” look (think: the way a good suit has structure you don’t notice until you do). The applied markers and crisp faceted hands catch the light brilliantly, and the framed date window keeps the layout balanced and purposeful.

The case is a big part of the appeal too—substantial gold plating with confident late-50s/early-60s shaping, giving you that warm gold presence without going full solid-gold pricing. We’ve paired it on a smart black strap, but if you’d prefer something else (tan, brown, rally, croc-grain etc.) we can swap within reason—this one suits plenty of looks.

Extra Points

Bulova is one of the great names in American watchmaking, with roots that run right through the history of modern timekeeping. It began in New York City in 1875, when Joseph Bulova opened his first shop on Maiden Lane—a street still closely tied to the jewellery and watch trade today. From the early days Bulova wasn’t just selling watches; it was helping define how watches were marketed and understood by the public, becoming famous for its bold, mass-media approach—including the widely cited “Bulova Watch Time” television spot in 1941, often referenced as the first TV commercial in the U.S.

The brand’s technical legacy is just as important. In the 1960s Bulova launched the Accutron, a groundbreaking electronic movement that became one of the most significant horological innovations of the 20th century and helped cement Bulova’s reputation for pushing technology forward. In the modern era, Bulova has continued under the umbrella of Citizen Watch Co., following Citizen’s acquisition (completed in 2008), which ensured the brand’s long-term stability while keeping its strong, heritage-led identity.

What we think

This is exactly the kind of vintage Bulova that’s easy to recommend: a genuinely well-made Swiss automatic with a standout dial, in a size that feels contemporary, (36mm) and with that warm gold presence that makes it look far more expensive than it needs to be. The stepped dial and chapter ring do most of the talking—there’s a lot going on, but it stays clean and elegant, the way good 1960s design should.

If you’re someone who likes the look of high-end mid-century dress watches but wants something a bit more left-field (and usually better value), this is a brilliant lane to be in.
