This Watch
The WWW British issue wristwatches are perhaps the most desired and collectible watches among all those issued to the British Army. This is perhaps because they were the first to be specially designed and custom made for the British Army.
'WWW' is said to stand for Watch, Wrist, Waterproof and was the descriptive code used by the British Army to identify it as a piece of equipment issued by the government.
These watches began being manufactured and issued to the British Forces in early 1944.
This example is in original untouched condition and an important note to mention is the case is unpolished and not re plated. Notice brass showing in the exact area the watch would be wound, likley with gloves and use were to the outer chrome plate on the lugs. These Dirty Dozen watches really need to be in as original condition as possible to retain its collected appeal. The dial and hands are also original with patina as expected for a watch of this age and with its history. Note also the lume burn on the inside of the plexi glass. In our opinion a very cool effect of the watch being stopped at 4pm for many years . Resulting in the luminous compound leaving a scorch mark. we can replace the crystal on request and send the original also. What really sets this piece apart is the character of the case wear. Rather than heavy abuse or later refinishing, the case shows smooth, even contact wear consistent with years of daily use—think gloves, uniform cuffs, and military webbing gradually burnishing the high points. This creates an almost “soft polished” effect, while the overall shape remains crisp and well-defined. In other words: it looks worn from service, not “tidied up” by modern polishing.
Extra Points
There were 12 Swiss manufacturers of the WWW contracted to the forces, and as such, the collection is commonly referred to by collectors and dealers alike as “The Dirty Dozen”. Omega, Longines, Jaeger Lecoultre , International Watch Co, Eterna and Cyma to name a few.

What we think
Only around 15,000 Vertex WWW watches were made for the British Army during the Second World War, making good, original examples highly sought after by collectors and can often be difficult to find. The watch comes fully serviced from our onsite workshop along with our 12 months service over. Also note the watch case head has a 3 digit number on one of the inner lugs - Matching the last 3 digits of the case back serial which is super rare to find! A nice thing to see as not all casebacks stayed together. we have attached a picture of its beautiful original dial out of the case.
