This Watch

We are incredibly excited about this 1940s Tissot wristwatch.  The dial alone is stunning!  Absolutely no doubt about it's originality, the black outer ring has applied Arabic radial numerals.  Inside is a minute-tracking ring on a charcoal grey, tropicalised section of the dial that, due to the aging, changes colour in certain lights - it's a mesmerising watch to look at!  A subsidiary seconds dial completes this watch and gives it a beautiful symmetry to the watch.  There is definitely a military-style/Omega Suveran look to this watch, which only adds to the 1940s design of it.

 

The 34mm, stainless steel, screw back case houses the mechanical manual wind, Tissot in-house caliber 27.3, fully serviced by us and running strongly.  When servicing this watch, our watchmaker noticed the similarity between this caliber and Omega's 26.5 (see final picture).  Note the bolt spring is identical!  Tissot and Omega had a strong relationship from the 1930s and Tissot movements are on par with Omegas from this age.  We've paired the watch on a brown leather strap, but it works well on anything.

The Swiss luxury watch company Tissot from Le Locle, Switzerland, was established in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. Under Charles-Emile’s direction, they manufactured pocket watches with parts from Russia and the United States. In 1915, the company began producing wristwatches. Between 1920 and 1977, Tissot produced its own movements. In 1930 to survive the 1929 crash and economic crisis they entered into an agreement with Omega to form the SSIH Group which 53 years later became the Swatch Group.

What we think

In our opinion, this Tissot is equal to what Omega were producing at the time in style and quality.  It is one not to be missed - the dial alone is exquisite - and it will look great in an established collection or a perfect piece for a first-time, vintage watch buyer!
