Think back to 1969, The moon landing and the unknown. space exploration massively interested watch companies and designers. From 1969 to the mid 1970s areas of watch design were influenced by space, space shuttles Astronauts and not forgetting 'Spacemen' or space persons. usually the designs were quite angular and abstract, some wacky and out there! This second generation Spaceman model was the more squared off straight line design and in our opinion the more attractive and comfortable series. (See Below an image of the first gen Round model) This piece is in great condition with minimal signs of use. It incorporates the swiss 17 Jewel caliber FHF-ST 96 manual winding. The watch is all original on its original stainless steel signed bracelet.
Extra Points
Designed by Andre Le Marquand, a designer, and artist who has the “spaceman” featured in the Modern Art Museum of New York. It is a unique design inspired I am sure of the spaceman helmet. He Introduced the watch in 1974 The case is chrome plated, the dial-in white is simple and stylish, it has broad hands, a bright orange second hand and markers at the 12, 3 and 9 with a date window at 6. Spaceman Audacieuse sits on the dial in a futuristic font, a nice touch. It reminds me of my childhood watching the Gerry Anderson sci-fi series like Joe 90 or Space 1999. Inside we have a 17 Jewel hand-wound movement. Fitted with a brushed and polished integrated bracelet.
What we think
I remember selling various models of spaceman back in the 1990s in new old stock. They sold like hotcakes and i thought to myself 'These are going to be future collectables for sure' Now the prices have at least tripled but they are few and far between in this condition. A fantastic find and great addition to any watch collection.
