Have a question?
This Watch
We have here a Tudor Oyster Royal from the 1958. The original, satin silver dial is in a immaculate condition. Pointed baton markers and unique arrow head markers sit inside an outer minute track. The dial is signed 'Tudor, Oyster, Royal' with the small rose at 12 o'clock and 'Shock Resisting' at 6 and chrome, leaf hour, minute and sweeping central seconds are in the middle of the watch, giving this watch a timeless elegance.
The polished, beveled bezel draws the eye to the dial and provides a nice contrast to the brushed, stainless steel, three-piece, Oyster case, which also has a Rolex-signed, screw-down crown at 3 o'clock. The case measures 32mm, and while this was a typical size for a gent's watch in this period, the modern man may find it a little on the small side. Inside is the manually wound ETA caliber 1182 with 17 jewels, fully serviced by us and running strongly. We've paired the watch on a black leather strap to keep it classic but it looks stunning on anything.
Extra Points
Just after the Second World War, Hans Wilsdorf founder of Rolex, knew that the time had come to expand and give the Tudor brand a proper identity of its own. Therefore, on 6 March 1946, he created the “Montres TUDOR S.A.” company, specialising in models for both men and women. Rolex guaranteed the technical, aesthetic and functional characteristics, along with the distribution and after-sales service.
The Tudor rose within a shield was meant to represent an invincible union of strength. Its robustness, elegant lines and beauty of design. In 1947 Tudor introduced the Oyster, their first waterproof watch, building on the success of the Rolex Oyster of the same period. In 1952, 26 Tudor Oyster Prince watches were included in the British scientific expedition to Greenland organized by the Royal Navy and sponsored by The Queen. This showed the world how robust Tudor Oyster watches were.
Fully serviced by us in our on-site workshop and comes with our 12 months, non-waterproof service cover.
What we think
About as good a vintage, pre-owned Tudor as you will find and a great option for anyone wanting to get into the vintage watch world or a seasoned collector. Tudors have such a visible connection to Rolex but still give off their own charm. Please note the 32mm size of this watch - it is slightly smaller than most vintage watches from the same period but still a comfortable wear for both him or her.
