This Watch

We have here an amazing Omega Seamaster Cosmic 2000, model 166.128 from 1976.  The dial is incredibly interesting and unique.  It has a gloss brown finish but has aged in such a way that it has created a spider web/crazy paving effect that makes us go weak at the knees!  We'd gladly just gaze at this all day, but we have been blessed with also having the date function at 3 o'clock and gorgeous, gilt, baton markers and index hour, minute and sweeping central hands.  Brown and gold is so evocative of 1970s designs and we can't get enough of it!  The dial is signed 'Omega, Automatic' at 12 o'clock, with an applied Omega logo and 'Seamaster, Cosmic, 2000' at 6.

The stainless steel and gold capped case has the unique 'Cosmic 2000' waterproof-design, where the outer bezel frame and movement are housed in sealed pod.  The watch is in great condition and has the engraved Seamaster logo on the back of the case.  Inside is the automatic Omega caliber 1012, fully serviced by us and running strongly.  We've paired the watch on a brown leather strap to complement the dial but with a face like that it can wear anything.

Founded by Louis Brandt in 1848, Omega started out as La Generale Watch Co., an unassuming, but international business. It wasn't until 1885, when the company had been taken over by Louis' sons, that the first mass-produced caliber, the Labrador, was released. By 1903, the company had renamed itself Omega and only two years later were they the official timekeepers at many sporting events across Switzerland. Omega stepped onto an international stage in 1932 as the official timekeepers at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the first of over 20 Olympic Games. Omega were one of the 12 companies, now known as the Dirty Dozen, commissioned to produce watches for the British Military during the Second World War. One of Omega's most iconic watches, the Seamaster, was introduced in 1948 to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Over 70 years later, it is still one of Omega's best selling watches. Omega made headlines in 1962 when Wally Schirra wore the Speedmaster as part of NASA's first crewed spaceflight programme, making the Speedmaster the first watch to enter space. It was only a few years before the Speedmaster became the official chronograph for the American space missions and was worn by Buzz Aldrin as well as the Apollo 13 crew. Omega are still involved with NASA and have been instrumental in creating vital pieces of equipment for space exploration. Omega's reputation continued to soar in the 1990s with Omega Seamaster.

During the late 1960s and 1970s, Omega produced a series of timepieces under the “Seamaster Cosmic” name, which sought to capitalise on Omega’s NASA/space travel heritage, and breathe new life into their Seamaster collection with casual and dress watches that embraced a more modern and futuristic design.  Omega produced the Seamaster Cosmic in a number of different styles and configurations, including a dive watch with an integrated bracelet; however the general design language of the Cosmic revolves around cushion-shaped cases, and dials that either have “crosshair” markings or checkered minute tracks.  Additionally, many Seamaster Cosmic watches used front-loading, single-piece cases, or a double case design with an integrated bracelet, like the Seamaster Cosmic 200 diver.

What we think

The 38mm stainless steel and gold case forms a great presence on the wrist, which in part is due to the nicely rounded bezel, but also due to the generous size for a watch of this era, which in turn leaves a timeless and contemporary feel to the watch.  If you're looking for an affordable, attractive and reliable vintage watch which stands up well to more modern sized watches, you'd be pushed to find a better example and it also holds its own with most Omega watches made today.
