This Watch

A proper slice of early-’70s cool: this Bulova mechanical alarm wristwatch (model 7241) pairs a bold, angular cushion/tonneau steel case with one of the best dials you’ll see on an alarm watch of the era. The dial is a rich inky blue with a subtle sunburst fade that shifts from near-black at the edge to brighter blue toward the centre, then framed by a lighter sky-blue minute/alarms track for extra pop. The watch is in fantastic condition , all original with both its original signed Bulova crowns, sharp case and gorgeous dial

Being a true alarm watch, it has two crowns and a dedicated arrow-tipped alarm hand. Set your wake-up time, wind the alarm, and when it goes off you get that unmistakable vintage “buzz” (more felt and heard than a modern beep). Add the crisp date at 3 o’clock and you’ve got a genuinely useful daily wearer—just with far more character than most.

The look is finished perfectly with the blue sports-style leather strap and contrast stitching, which echoes the dial’s sporty palette and suits the era-correct case design.

Extra Points

Bulova is one of the great names in American watchmaking, with roots that run right through the history of modern timekeeping. It began in New York City in 1875, when Joseph Bulova opened his first shop on Maiden Lane—a street still closely tied to the jewellery and watch trade today. From the early days Bulova wasn’t just selling watches; it was helping define how watches were marketed and understood by the public, becoming famous for its bold, mass-media approach—including the widely cited “Bulova Watch Time” television spot in 1941, often referenced as the first TV commercial in the U.S.

The brand’s technical legacy is just as important. In the 1960s Bulova launched the Accutron, a groundbreaking electronic movement that became one of the most significant horological innovations of the 20th century and helped cement Bulova’s reputation for pushing technology forward. In the modern era, Bulova has continued under the umbrella of Citizen Watch Co., following Citizen’s acquisition (completed in 2008), which ensured the brand’s long-term stability while keeping its strong, heritage-led identity.

What we think

Mechanical alarms are one of those complications that still feel a bit magical: they’re practical, tactile, and slightly theatrical—especially in a sharp 1970s steel case like this. And that dial… the combination of deep blue, lighter blue accents, and chunky applied markers gives it a real “concept watch” vibe without being shouty.

If you like watches that do something interactive (set it, wind it, feel it), this is a brilliant alternative to the usual chronograph/ diver route—and the alarm hand + dual crowns make it instantly recognizable on the wrist.
