This Watch
Here we have a 1974 Omega Seamaster Cosmic 166.0195 that has a 37mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case polished and brushed finished with integrated lugs that fit the integrated bracelet perfectly, a lug-to-lug length of 41.5mm and a case thickness of just 9mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side sits a signed crown, the polished bezel holds a flat mineral crystal protecting a uniquely aged sunburst anthracite grey dial. The applied baton indexes have a lume pip indicating the hours, at 3 o’clock a framed date window, elegant slim sword hands have black and lume infill, complemented with a needle sweeping seconds hand. At 12 o’clock we have an applied Omega, with Automatic printed underneath, and at 6 o’clock “Seamaster Cosmic ''. On the reverse, a pressure-fit case back with the embossed Hippocampus along with Seamaster, the seahorse on the case back represents Neptune the God of the sea. It was conceived by Pierre Borie after seeing a picture of Neptune riding a chariot pulled by seahorses, it is the reason why the seahorses are wearing a bridle.
Inside we have an automatic Omega Cal. 1012, 23 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, has hacking and quick set-date functions for your convenience. Fitted on its original chunky integrated Omega bracelet with a satin-brushed finish and a signed folding jewellery clasp the integral bracelet joins seamlessly. Inside is the automatic caliber 1012, fully serviced by us and running strongly. The watch comes on its original bracelet to keep it in the sporty category, No leather option for this baby.
The unusual dial has aged over the years as many of these 1970s electroplated satin dials often did, Usually this was a reaction to sunlight and humidity combined with the daily elements. This watch has such a contemporary feel to it, especially given its larger size, that we absolutely adore! The integral bracelet style has made a massive comeback and rumours are that this was yet Genta design,
Extra Points
Founded by Louis Brandt in 1848, Omega started out as La Generale Watch Co., an unassuming, but international business. It wasn't until 1885, when the company had been taken over by Louis' sons, that the first mass-produced caliber, the Labrador, was released. By 1903, the company had renamed itself Omega and only two years later were they the official timekeepers at many sporting events across Switzerland. Omega stepped onto an international stage in 1932 as the official timekeepers at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the first of over 20 Olympic Games. Omega were one of the 12 companies, now known as the Dirty Dozen, commissioned to produce watches for the British Military during the Second World War. One of Omega's most iconic watches, the Seamaster, was introduced in 1948 to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Over 70 years later, it is still one of Omega's best selling watches. Omega made headlines in 1962 when Wally Schirra wore the Speedmaster as part of NASA's first crewed spaceflight programme, making the Speedmaster the first watch to enter space. It was only a few years before the Speedmaster became the official chronograph for the American space missions and was worn by Buzz Aldrin as well as the Apollo 13 crew. Omega are still involved with NASA and have been instrumental in creating vital pieces of equipment for space exploration.
This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.
What we think
Hailing from the early 1970s, the Cosmic is now a much sought after watch and they represent everything we love about the late 1960s/early 1970s watch design. Perfect for the first-time buyer but the Cosmic is definitely a watch worth having in every collection. Also standing up next to most modern pieces for size , a rarer large watch for its age,
