This Watch

On offer here is a distinctively 1970s New Old Stock Radical Kilimandjaro electric blue dial "Shutter" or "Venetian Blind" effect or The design is meant to create a "holographic" or "3D" illusion. By placing the darkest shadow right across the center axis (from 9 to 3), it creates a sense of "gravity" on the dial. In the 1970s, this was the peak of "Space Age" design—trying to make mechanical objects look like high-tech electronic screens. -  Day/Date with a polished and brushed stainless steel oval-shaped case. The polished flanks lead to covered lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 37mm and a case thickness of 11mm, ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed coin-edged push/pull crown. A brushed smooth bezel holds an oval-shaped crystal above a striking and quite unique effect dial! an outer minute track with lume pips and applied baton indexes mark the hours; at 3 o’clock, a framed day/date window, elegant slim baton hands tipped with lume are complemented by a white seconds hand; at 12 o’clock, we have the  motif and at 12 o’clock “Kilimandjaro” completes this sophisticated dress watch. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with its wax sticker still in place above the engraved details of the watch, inside an automatic MSR S77 Automatic (21 Jewels) beating at 21,600 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with a well-suited blue 22mm padded leather strap which we think looks great!

Extra Points

In the 1960s and 70s, many Swiss brands struggled against the "Quartz Crisis." To survive, several famous houses merged into a conglomerate called MSR (Manufactures d'Horlogerie Suisses Réunies SA). This group included:

Marvin

Revue (now Revue Thommen)

Phenix

Buser

Radical was a "private label" or a smaller brand under this same MSR umbrella. Because they shared resources, these brands often used the exact same cases, dials, and movements. The Kilimandjaro was a specific shared model line produced by the group, which is why you see identical versions with different brand names on the dial.

What we think

A real retro piece with styling equal to the omega dynamic or longines comet models. Directly from our own shop storage vaults. One of over 400 new old stock watches we purchased some ten years ago from a retired watch retailer in Belgium.  A vintage piece in unused condition and a fabulous design with a high grade movement which will serve you well for many years.
