This Watch
We have here an uncommon omega model with a one piece, front loading octagonal case! Another wild and wonderful design from the late 1960s/1970s - The original simplistic grey satin dial again seems to change colour at different angles. silver / grey parallel satin finish with simple straight thin markers and hands. Date function at the usual 3 o'clock position with fast change facility. At the centre of the dial are the black baton hour and minute hands, which are nicely complemented by the chrome central seconds hand. we have noted some patina to the outsite edges of the dial but due to its design its very hard to spot with the naked eye.
The 166.085 Deville model's case is a monocoque design with front entry much like many other omega models including The Dynamic and cosmic. These cases were produced to limit entry points for moisture and the elements. We use a special omega tool to Gain entry to service these models, A unique octagonal shape, yet the dial and movement are both round. The excitement doesn't stop there - the 36mm X 40mm case is one solid piece of brushed stainless steel. The case also has a recessed crown, which gives it a sporty, aerodynamic feel, despite its irregular shape. The case has some signs of use but nothing of note. We have lightly refinished the bracelet too.
Inside this beauty is the super slim automatic Omega caliber 1002 , fully serviced by us and running strongly. We've kept the watch on its original Omega bracelet ref 1173 with correct 652 end Shuts , but it would also look great on a strap,
Extra Points
Founded by Louis Brandt in 1848, Omega started out as La Generale Watch Co., an unassuming, but international business. It wasn't until 1885, when the company had been taken over by Louis' sons, that the first mass-produced caliber, the Labrador, was released. By 1903, the company had renamed itself Omega and only two years later were they the official timekeepers at many sporting events across Switzerland. Omega stepped onto an international stage in 1932 as the official timekeepers at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the first of over 20 Olympic Games. Omega were one of the 12 companies, now known as the Dirty Dozen, commissioned to produce watches for the British Military during the Second World War. One of Omega's most iconic watches, the Seamaster, was introduced in 1948 to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Over 70 years later, it is still one of Omega's best selling watches.
This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.
What we think
As a child of the 1970s, I've always loved that particular era of watch design - they are always a really comfortable wear on the wrist and have a great, sporty feel to them. We have not had many of this model in stock and again quite a rariety. this one checks all the right boxes! The perfect watch for the vintage watch newbie, seasoned collector, or 1970s lover.
