This Watch

The first Omega Seamasters was based loosely around waterproof watches made for the Royal Navy. What made the Seamaster appealing was using an O-Ring gasket which gave it temperature and depth resistance. In 1955, the Swiss Laboratory for Watch ‌Research‌ tested out 50 Seamaster cases with a 60-meter depth rating. Omega was so confident that they strapped one to the outside of a plane and flew it over the North pole in 1956. The very year this particular watch was made. The 34mm stainless steel case has tapering lugs for that comfortable fit on the wrist. Unpolished surfaces throughout with a stepped polished bezel. Domed crystal protects the champagne dial, applied polished baton indexes with Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9. Dauphine hands with a centre seconds hand that sweeps around the dial. Text is kept to a minimum with Omega Automatic at 12 o’clock and Seamaster at 6 o’clock. On the back, we have a screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Omega Cal. 500, 17 jewels beating at 18,900 beats per hour and fitted on an 18mm strap.

Extra Points

Formerly known as the La Generale Watch Co. it was founded by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. In 1903 they renamed the company Omega until 1982 when they officially changed their name to Omega SA. They are part of the Swiss Swatch Group.

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no original Omega box or paperwork. The watch comes paired on a well-suited suede strap with a reproduction Omega buckle. The watch is from circa 1956 and is sold in worn, vintage, condition but overall fair and original for its age as you can see from the photos.

This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.

What we think

The dial is what drew me in to this watch, granted any vintage Seamaster with these fat lugs I adore but to find one with an original crosshair dial like this doesn't happen often, then on top of that a nice original case which still has its bold lines, check out those macros!
