This Watch

Here we have a 1953 Movado Bumper with a fine 33mm  François Borgel polished stainless steel case. François Borgel made cases for Longines, Mido, Movado, Patak-Philippe and Rolex. They later became Taubert & Fils. Their stamp was F.B. and a Geneva key, which you can find on the inside of the case back. Elegant tapered curved lugs with a lug to lug length of 40mm and a thickness of 11mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. The signed crown sits slightly recessed on the right side . A flat polished bezel holds a domed crystal above a white dial. Gilt minute track with applied 12, 3, 6 and 9 with faceted edged arrow points in between mark the hours. Elegant dauphine hands are complemented by a fine tapered sweeping second hand. On the reverse, a screw-down case back. Inside a Bumper Automatic Movado Cal. 224A, 17 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on a 16mm rare Bonklip bracelet.

Extra Points

Achilles Ditesheim at the age of 19 founded LAI Ditescheim & Freres SA in 1881.  With the help of 6 watchmakers, he built a workshop in the small village of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.  In 1905 he renamed the company Movado meaning “always in motion” in the international language of Esperanto.  In 1947 Nathan George Horwitt created the single dot watch dial.  In 1960 Horwitts original design became the first watch dial ever to be accepted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.  In 2017 Movado Group purchased the Olivia Burton brand based in London, one of the fastest-growing fashion watch and jewellery brands in the UK.  In October 2018 Movado Group acquired MVMT who specialise in selling quartz watches, sunglasses and jewellery.  The Movado Group also owns Concord, Ebel.

As with all our stock, it comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.

What we think

I absolutely adore any François Borgel case and to have it in a brand I love as much as Movado is always fantastic, this is a watch that I almost kept in the personal collection, but unfortunately, I cannot keep them all...
