This Watch

We have here very exciting and rare Omega Foibos (Greek for 'The Shining One') CK 785 from 1934!  This stunning, original, Enamelled / porcelain dial with Art Deco stylings would have been considered a radical design choice at the time.  It has sharp, black hour markers in a mixture of trapezium and square shapes inside a railway-style minute track.  The dial is simply signed 'Omega,' with the famous Omega logo at 12 o'clock and subsidiary seconds dial sit at 6.  The original, blue steel hands have a lume which has aged nicely.

The stainless steel case measures 31mm. Whilst this was a typical size for a gent's watch in this period, the modern man might find it a little on the small side.  It has shorty lugs that feel very Cubist and in keeping with the rest of the stylings of the watch.  The slightly recessed crown adds to this more boxy feel and it's these little details that make us go weak at the knees.  Inside is Omega's mechanical manual wind caliber 26.5SOB, fully serviced and running strongly.  We've paired the watch on a period, new old stock, stainless steel, Swiss bracelet, but it looks equally good on leather.

While servicing the watch, we noticed evidence of past lume markers at the hour marks that had deteriorated over the years.  We have sympathetically reinstated the outer maker dots.  We think it completes a very special dial.

Extra Points

Founded by Louis Brandt in 1848, Omega started out as La Generale Watch Co., an unassuming, but international business. It wasn't until 1885, when the company had been taken over by Louis' sons, that the first mass-produced caliber, the Labrador, was released. By 1903, the company had renamed itself Omega and only two years later were they the official timekeepers at many sporting events across Switzerland. Omega stepped onto an international stage in 1932 as the official timekeepers at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the first of over 20 Olympic Games. Omega were one of the 12 companies, now known as the Dirty Dozen, commissioned to produce watches for the British Military during the Second World War. One of Omega's most iconic watches, the Seamaster, was introduced in 1948 to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Over 70 years later, it is still one of Omega's best selling watches. Omega made headlines in 1962 when Wally Schirra wore the Speedmaster as part of NASA's first crewed spaceflight programme, making the Speedmaster the first watch to enter space. It was only a few years before the Speedmaster became the official chronograph for the American space missions and was worn by Buzz Aldrin as well as the Apollo 13 crew. Omega are still involved with NASA and have been instrumental in creating vital pieces of equipment for space exploration.

This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.

What we think

This watch is slightly smaller at 31mm and is the perfect size for a more petite frame, a lady or a young adult.  Although combined on the bracelet it still looks fitting on a 7+ inch wrist.  A rare find and the perfect watch for the vintage newbie or seasoned collector.  Oozing with charm and character, this highly-sought after Art Deco Omega will definitely be a talking point and nearly 90 years old
