This Watch

We have here a very attractive looking watch from the 1940s. specifications of a military piece with the steel screw-back case and trademark black Dial however no actual markings. This could have possibly been an ATP candidate or prototype but we are selling as military style .  ATP stands for Army Time Pieces and is found on wristwatches from 1935-1945.  The requirements of an ATP "specification" wristwatch were at 15-jewel, non-shock absorbing, 10 1/2 to 12 Ligne movement, a white or silver dial, minute tracking and luminous hands.

The gloss black original dial is in fantastic condition as are the painted numerals and hands painted, Arabic numerals sit inside the outer minute track.  At 12 o'clock, the dial is signed 'Sigma - Waterproof shock absorber '.  At 6 o'clock is the subsidiary seconds dial, with lumed  hands just perfect in style and form.

The 32mm, stainless steel case has lug to lug length of 40mm and a thickness of 10mm, making for a comfortable wear for both him and her.  The case is an unusual angled shape with polished and satin finishes.  Inside is the mechanical swiss manual wind ETA caliber 900 with 15 jewels, fully serviced by us and running strongly.  We've fitted the watch on a light tan plain strap, but it looks great on anything.

Extra Points

SIGMA
In 1952 Roger Lévy inherited the business from his father Lucien Lévy. Roger woud a few years later play a key role in the cooperation with Alexandre Valentin and establishment of the watchmaker group United Orbit.

Sigma has a long history that can be traced back to the 1800s. However, it was not commercially registered until 1900 as Fabrique Sigma (by Frey & Co) in Bienne, Switzerland. Later to be known as Montre Sigma.

Prior to the Lévy family taking control of Montre Sigma in 1935, it was under the ownership of Dreyfus & Co. The Lévy and Dreyfus families had close ties and were both influential and wealthy families at the time. This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.
