This Watch

We have here a futuristic Omega Seamaster Cosmic, reference 165.022, from 1967.  The sharp, satin silver/pearl cross hair dial has a silver, outer chapter track with mixed bold cube markers with chamfered edges and slim, sword hour, minute and sweeping central seconds hands.  No date window 3 o'clock this time making this truly symmetrical in design . The glass and the dial is signed 'Omega, Automatic,' with the famous Omega logo at 12 and 'Seamaster, Cosmic' at 6 o'clock. These crosshair original dials are scarce and hard to find in this condition.

The 34.5mm, monocoque/front-loading case is made from one solid piece of stainless steel.  The tonneau irregular curve to the case and irregular shape between the lugs is very unusual and only enhances the retro design of the watch.  Inside is the automatic Omega caliber 552, fully serviced by us and running strongly  We've kept the watch on its original Flat brick like bracelet, which is a good size, but links can be removed if needed.  The watch also looks great on leather, too. We have given the bracelet a very light re-satin and clean but as per demand left the watch head as is with its original angles and finish.

Founded by Louis Brandt in 1848, Omega started out as La Generale Watch Co., an unassuming, but international business. It wasn't until 1885, when the company had been taken over by Louis' sons, that the first mass-produced caliber, the Labrador, was released. By 1903, the company had renamed itself Omega and only two years later were they the official timekeepers at many sporting events across Switzerland. Omega stepped onto an international stage in 1932 as the official timekeepers at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the first of over 20 Olympic Games. Omega were one of the 12 companies, now known as the Dirty Dozen, commissioned to produce watches for the British Military during the Second World War. One of Omega's most iconic watches, the Seamaster, was introduced in 1948 to celebrate their 100th anniversary. Over 70 years later, it is still one of Omega's best selling watches. Omega made headlines in 1962 when Wally Schirra wore the Speedmaster as part of NASA's first crewed spaceflight programme, making the Speedmaster the first watch to enter space. It was only a few years before the Speedmaster became the official chronograph for the American space missions and was worn by Buzz Aldrin as well as the Apollo 13 crew. Omega are still involved with NASA and have been instrumental in creating vital pieces of equipment for space exploration.

What we think

One of the First introduced in 1967 and produced for only a decade, the Seamaster Cosmic is now a much sought after watch.  These irregular-shaped, space-age beauties represent everything we love about the late 1960s/early 1970s watch design. Perfect for the first-time buyer but Cosmic is definitely a watch worth having in every collection. Rare to find one in this condition with its original 1507 Bracelet and unusual 539 end pieces.
