This Watch
We have here a stunning, early doctors watch with duo dial in a sold English 9ct gold case. The dial is signed 'E.J. Frankland & Co. Ltd, Ludgate Circus,' a London retailer, which is just a stone's throw from us here at AWC. We particularly love the dial, which has a nice and even patina to it, giving no doubt to its originality. Deco, Arabic numerals and the original, blue steel hands sit inside the outer-minute track in the top dial. In the lower dial is a completely separate subsidiary seconds, with Arabic minute markers.
The sharp-edged, rectangular, solid 9ct gold case was made by British Watch Cases Ltd. (BWC), of 236-240 Pentonville Road, London. There is little known about BWC - they produced gold cases for imported Swiss movements. They exhibited at the British Industries Fair in 1937. The case back is hallmarked Edinburgh 'C' and stamped 'B.W.C., London Made, 7713.' BWC registered marks in Edinburgh for several other companies, including Stauffer, Son & Co. and George Nicolet. Inside is the Swiss, rectangular, FHF-based caliber 29, fully serviced by us and running strongly. We've paired the watch on a Rolex-style, spring-loaded, heavy, gold-capped, period bracelet, which was likely to have been made in England and would have been an option when the original owner purchased the watch in store.

Extra Points
Duo dial doctor's watches became particularly popular with the advent of the Art Deco period in the 1920s. Many companies produced several different models, but all had a shared common purpose - to provide functionality and legibility for doctors. The watches were primarily designed to be used to take a patient's pulse. The evolution of the doctors watch can be seen in the design of the Rolex Prince in 1928, with the large subsidiary seconds at 6 o'clock, as this watch was also designed to assist doctors with measuring heart rates.
For a watch of this age, we would recommend that it is considered for occasional use, once or twice a week. This is largely because watches of this age weren't built to deal with modern life. They do not have dust proofing, shock absorption and are easily magnetized. Please do try and keep the watch away from magnets such as computers, phones, speakers etc.
This watch comes fully serviced by our on-site workshop and with a 12 month, non-waterproof service cover.
What we think
This watch is a real piece of history. A timepiece showing the challenge of integrating a formal dress watch with a functional piece of equipment, and only a few doctors watches were made in solid gold, making this watch extra special. A comfortable fit on the wrist, this 1930s, Deco-style wristwatch is perfect for him or her and is a must-have in any collection!
